In February 2019, the famous Bloomberg website published its list of the world’s healthiest countries (“Healthiest Country Index”). To prepare this list, 169 countries were evaluated by the World Health Organization and the World Bank. This year Spain has been nominated # 1, before Italy (# 2), Japan (# 4), Sweden (# 6), France (# 12), USA (# 35), China (# 52) or Russia (# 95). This classification has been made taking several criteria into account. For example, life expectancy, tobacco use, obesity rate, access to clean water, and sanitation. In the last decade, Spain registered a decrease in the number of cardiovascular diseases and cancer deaths, and it is expected to have the best life expectancy in the world by 2040 (86 years). The researchers say that an individual’s level of health is highly influenced by their eating habits. A very relevant statement in the case of Spain (nº1) and Italy (nº2). Two countries famous for their “Mediterranean diet”.
